Successful NEUROMAN Project Start & Kickoff

Successful NEUROMAN Project Start & Kickoff

The newly launched CTI-KIAT project NEUROMAN aims to create the first human (male and female) and monkey computational phantoms for studying the interactions of neurons and electromagnetic fields considering anatomical and physiological phenomena. At the project’s kickoff meeting held on the 19th January 2017 in Zurich, team members from the IT’IS Foundation, ZMT Zurich MedTech AG and their South Korean project partners discussed the critical steps how this goal could be achieved.

NEUROMAN bridges gaps between the fields of neuron dynamics modeling and computational phantom dosimetry research. The new anatomical models will include detailed peripheral nerve geometry with neuronal electrophysiology coupled to a low frequency electromagnetic field solver in Sim4Life. To achieve this, they will be segmented from high resolution cryosection image data and made available as an extension to the Virtual Population for Sim4Life users.

Throughout the day, participants discussed the status of the research area, project goals, and expectations of the different stakeholders with respect to the project outcome. Bryn Lloyd, Head of Computational Phantoms and the coordinator and principle investigator of the project, explains the expected impact from NEUROMAN: “NEUROMAN will affect neuro- and electroceuticals research globally and open new emerging markets for neuro-medical and wireless power transfer devices.”

The project is sponsored by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT), the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI) for fostering innovation cooperation between Switzerland and South Korea.

The next partner’s meeting takes place October 2017 in Suwon, South Korea, and will discuss progress so far and next steps.
